SUGGESTED READING

SUGGESTED READING

There are many guide books to Syria that cover the major sights as well as accommodation and food.  Perhaps the best single guide book to historical Syrian sites is: Ross Burns. Monuments of Syria: An Historical Guide.  I.B. Tauris, London, 1994.

For those who desire a background in the history and culture of Syria perhaps the best introduction in English is: Warwick Ball. Syria: A Historical and Architectural Guide.  Scorpion Publishing Ltd., Essex, 1994.

The so called dead cities in Northern Syria has been the subject of specialist studies, but a comprehensive and well illustrated introduction has been written by one of the foremost scholars: Ignacio Peña. The Christian Art of Byzantine Syria. Garnet Publishing, London, 1997.

There are many books that cover Palmyra.  Perhaps the best general guide is: Iain Browning. Palmyra. Chatto & Windus, London, 1979.
